Kieren awaits transfer to Norfolk but, with Simon returning to lead his followers in a Second Rising, Maxine allows Gary to force Kieren to help find him. At the village fete it is noticed that Amy is transforming into a human by her ability to eat solid foods and the militant PDS sufferers have a stand-off in the graveyard against Jem and her rabid hunters. Kieren's father Steve stops Jem from killing her brother but an increasingly deranged Maxine, whose brother Danny was slain, announces that she wants a Second Rising to revive him and murders Amy, who is the true first risen. She demands the death of all PDS sufferers in Roarton but this horrifies the villagers and, as she is taken to an asylum, an uneasy truce occurs between the villagers and the Partially Dead with Kieren and Simon reconciled. "In The Flesh" -- Four years after the Rising, the government starts to rehabilitate the Undead back into the society including teenager Kieren Walker, who returns home to his small Lancashire village to face a hostile reception as well as his own demons.

After his death four years ago, his friends and family thought they’d never see Kieren again. But then, shortly after his funeral, thousands of the dead were re-animated; and now, after months of re-habilitation and medication, the zombies are gradually being returned to their homes.

Now known as PDS sufferers (Partially Deceased Syndrome) - and since the passing of the PDS Protection act - the government have set an agenda of acceptance and tolerance, one that is at odds with the communities abandoned at the time of the rising, and the bloody battle between zombies and humans that ensued.

A cauldron of brutal anti-zombie sentiment and the source of the ‘rotter’ hating Human Volunteer Force (HVF), Kieren returns to his home in the rural village of Roarton. Here he is forced to confront his family, the community that rejected him and the flashbacks that continue to haunt him of what he did in his untreated state.
